Decode percent escapes into readable Unicode text

The URL Decoder reverses valid percent encoding and reconstructs readable UTF-8 text. It is useful for inspecting encoded query values, path components, and copied links while keeping the input in your browser.

COMMON USES

When this tool is useful

  • Read a percent-encoded search term or query parameter value.
  • Inspect Unicode path data from logs, links, or API requests.
  • Confirm that a value round-trips through component encoding.

THREE STEPS

How to use the URL Decoder

  1. Paste the percent-encoded component into the input panel.
  2. Select Decode to reconstruct readable text.
  3. Check the output before using it as data or re-inserting it into a URL.

PRIVACY

Your input stays in this browser

The operation runs on your device and does not require the input to be uploaded. Copy and download actions happen only when you choose them. Avoid treating encoded output as encryption, and follow your own security requirements for confidential data.

WORKED EXAMPLE

URL Decoder: input and expected result

Input or settings

hello%20world%20%26%20caf%C3%A9

Expected result

hello world & café

Percent-encoded UTF-8 bytes return to readable Unicode text. A literal '+' remains '+' in component decoding.

METHOD & LIMITS

How the URL Decoder works

Processing method

The tool applies decodeURIComponent to the input and reports errors for malformed escapes or invalid UTF-8 sequences.

What to review

Decode once for each intentional encoding layer. This is not a query-string parser and does not apply form-urlencoded plus-to-space conversion.

PRACTICAL NOTES

What to know before using it

Why can malformed input fail?

A percent sign must be followed by a complete hexadecimal byte escape, and the decoded byte sequence must represent valid text.

Does a plus sign become a space?

Component decoding does not automatically apply form-urlencoded plus-to-space rules.
