Format JSON without sending data to a server

The JSON Formatter turns compact or inconsistently spaced JSON into a structure that is easier to scan, review, and debug. Choose an indentation size for readable output, or minify the same document when you need a compact payload.

COMMON USES

When this tool is useful

  • Inspect an API response before debugging a client or integration.
  • Normalize configuration files for code review and documentation.
  • Minify a valid JSON document for transport or storage.

THREE STEPS

How to use the JSON Formatter

  1. Paste JSON into the blue input panel or load the included example.
  2. Choose the indentation size, then select Format or Minify.
  3. Review the green result panel and copy or download the output.

PRIVACY

Your input stays in this browser

The operation runs on your device and does not require the input to be uploaded. Copy and download actions happen only when you choose them. Avoid treating encoded output as encryption, and follow your own security requirements for confidential data.

WORKED EXAMPLE

JSON Formatter: input and expected result

Input or settings

{"name":"Ada","active":true}

Expected result

{
  "name": "Ada",
  "active": true
}

With 2-space indentation, each property is displayed on its own line. Minify produces the compact input shown here.

METHOD & LIMITS

How the JSON Formatter works

Processing method

The formatter parses with JSON.parse and serializes with JSON.stringify. It reports syntax errors before formatting.

What to review

Parsing can discard duplicate object keys and round numbers outside JavaScript's safe integer range. Keep large identifiers as strings and retain your original file.

PRACTICAL NOTES

What to know before using it

Does the formatter repair invalid JSON?

No. It reports the syntax problem so you can correct the source without silently changing its meaning.

Are Unicode characters preserved?

Yes. JSON strings containing Hangul, CJK, Arabic, emoji, and other Unicode text remain readable.
