CODE FORMATTERS · LOCAL PROCESSING

Turn compact HTML into readable markup

The HTML Formatter separates nested elements and adds consistent indentation so a snippet or document is easier to review. It is suited to cleanup and inspection rather than rewriting the semantics of your markup.

COMMON USES

When this tool is useful

  • Read compressed HTML copied from a response, template, or email.
  • Prepare a clear markup example for documentation or a bug report.
  • Spot nesting problems that are difficult to see on one line.

THREE STEPS

How to use the HTML Formatter

  1. Paste an HTML document or fragment into the input panel.
  2. Select Format to apply line breaks and indentation.
  3. Inspect the output before copying it back into your project.

PRIVACY

Your input stays in this browser

The operation runs on your device and does not require the input to be uploaded. Copy and download actions happen only when you choose them. Avoid treating encoded output as encryption, and follow your own security requirements for confidential data.

WORKED EXAMPLE

HTML Formatter: input and expected result

Input or settings

<main><p>Hello</p></main>

Expected result

<main>
  <p>
    Hello
  </p>
</main>

The example is an HTML fragment. Complete documents may also include a doctype and the browser-created document structure.

METHOD & LIMITS

How the HTML Formatter works

Processing method

DOMParser builds an HTML document, then the formatter serializes either the full document or body fragment and adds line breaks.

What to review

The browser can repair malformed HTML and normalize markup. This is not sanitization; review inline whitespace and whitespace-sensitive elements before replacing production source.

PRACTICAL NOTES

What to know before using it

Is this an HTML sanitizer?

No. It formats text and does not promise to remove unsafe scripts or attributes.

Can it format a fragment without html and body tags?

Yes. You can use it with a complete document or a smaller markup fragment.
