Expand compressed CSS for faster inspection

The CSS Formatter separates rule blocks and declarations, then applies consistent indentation. It is a quick way to inspect minified styles, review copied components, or prepare a short stylesheet for discussion.

COMMON USES

When this tool is useful

  • Read a compressed CSS rule copied from a production bundle.
  • Prepare a stylesheet excerpt for documentation or review.
  • Separate selectors and declarations when tracing a visual issue.

THREE STEPS

How to use the CSS Formatter

  1. Paste CSS rules into the input panel.
  2. Select Format to add line breaks and indentation.
  3. Review the result and copy or download the readable stylesheet.

PRIVACY

Your input stays in this browser

The operation runs on your device and does not require the input to be uploaded. Copy and download actions happen only when you choose them. Avoid treating encoded output as encryption, and follow your own security requirements for confidential data.

WORKED EXAMPLE

CSS Formatter: input and expected result

Input or settings

a{color:red;margin:0}

Expected result

a {
  color:red;
  margin:0;
}

The formatter expands the block and places each declaration on a separate line while retaining property values.

METHOD & LIMITS

How the CSS Formatter works

Processing method

A local character scanner inserts indentation around braces and declaration separators while tracking strings and comments.

What to review

This is not a complete CSS parser or validator. Complex functions, embedded data URLs, and unusual syntax need manual review; Sass and Less compilation are not supported.

PRACTICAL NOTES

What to know before using it

Does formatting change selector specificity?

No. The formatter changes presentation, not the intended selector order or specificity.

Is this a full CSS compiler?

No. It does not compile Sass, Less, or other preprocessor syntax.
