Calculate WPM from a timed sample

Count the words completed and divide by elapsed minutes. For 360 words read in two minutes, the rate is 180 WPM. Use at least a few hundred representative words so a pause or unusually short sentence does not dominate the result.

Match the sample to the future task. A familiar story read silently will not predict the time needed to explain a technical document aloud.

  • Use actual elapsed time, including natural pauses.
  • Measure comprehension as well as speed when reading.
  • Repeat the test and use the median rather than the fastest attempt.

Evidence-based reading benchmarks

Marc Brysbaert's review analyzed 190 studies with 18,573 participants and estimated average adult silent reading rates in English of 238 WPM for non-fiction and 260 WPM for fiction. It estimated oral reading at 183 WPM from 77 studies.

These are population averages, not personal targets. Reading rate varies with age, language proficiency, text difficulty, purpose, fatigue, and how much information must be retained.

Use slower rates for speaking and complex material

A presentation needs space for emphasis, breathing, audience response, and visual transitions. Planning around 120–160 WPM is more realistic than using a silent-reading benchmark. Dense or safety-critical information may require an even slower pace.

The fastest understandable delivery is not always the most effective. Measure whether listeners can follow the argument and remember the next step.
