What ‘without spaces’ usually removes

Most character counters remove whitespace, not just the ordinary space bar character. That includes tabs and line breaks. Punctuation, symbols, emoji, and letters remain in the result.

If an assignment says ‘excluding spaces,’ confirm whether it means only U+0020 spaces or all whitespace. This tool uses the broader, more useful whitespace definition and reports line count separately.

  • Spaces, tabs, and line breaks are excluded from the no-whitespace total.
  • Commas, periods, quotation marks, and hyphens still count.
  • The original text is never rewritten by the counter.

Why emoji can make counters disagree

A visible emoji may be built from several Unicode code points joined into one grapheme. JavaScript and some databases also expose UTF-16 code units, where characters outside the Basic Multilingual Plane use two units.

For that reason, a social platform, database field, and browser form may report different lengths for the same visible string. Use the platform-specific counter when a strict publishing rule applies.

Choose the count required by the destination

Academic assignments often specify words or characters including spaces. Translation billing may use source characters without spaces. Developer APIs may define bytes, Unicode scalar values, or code units instead.

Record the measurement method with the number. ‘1,200 Unicode code points including whitespace’ is reproducible; ‘1,200 characters’ can be ambiguous.
